Tossed about (2)
As mentioned, I like multitasking, since, contrary to popular opinion, I find it effective in my working life. It can be very effective if one knows how to use it, but it can certainly backfire as its deficiencies are well-documented. I have mentioned before what I consider to be the many benefits and advantages of multitasking, and one natural consequence of my multitasking routine is the feeling of being ‘ tossed about’, like a ship sailing in the middle of a rough sea. This is a scary imagery indeed, and the mental feeling is even scarier, at least to me, as we all love inertia and actively moving from one point to another is never easy. This feeling is entirely natural, as frequently (though not constantly) switching between different tasks requires a quick conversion and adoption of (very) different skills and mindsets ranging from intellectual to practical (e.g. taking a break from my studies to cook), from the spiritual to the physical (from late night work to going for an early morning jog), from the self-reflective to the social. The periodic switching of tasks can give me a sense of nausea, as I do not remain static and sit on one task for very long (but long enough for me to get into flow as I do not switch tasks until I become saturated with a particular task and cease to make progress). What is interesting about this pattern of multitasking is that I often get a sense of how busy I am by how many times I switch tasks in a particular timeframe (e.g. a day), since switching tasks registers a cognitive mark in me as it takes a little mental effort to go from one task to another. On a busy day, therefore, I often switch between many tasks frantically, and on a less busy day, I may end up doing fewer things at a slower pace. Switching tasks is hence like a meter that ticks whenever I switch from one task to another, and I can measure my productivity by how many times I switch tasks, which is pretty cool. Let’s keep ticking and getting things done!
