Meaning of Numbers: Numerical Shifts

Square numbers beautifully distributed.

It has been a while since I have blogged about numbers. Here is my most recent encounter with some of the numerical patterns that I have discussed before. Numbers are everywhere in our daily lives, and one can easily find numerical patterns in just about every corner. As mentioned, numbers hold special significance in the Chinese language where homophony determines whether a particular number is propitious or not. In one of the iPhone games that I have been playing lately, there is a procedure of awarding points to user profiles, and the daily quota is 15 points. These game points are quite useful since they can be used to buy items and strengthen your team (this is a warfare game). I was on 29 points, and with my daily addition of 15 points I was on course to 44 points, a most ominous number in Chinese superstition. I was having a feeling that I was going to have a bad day, but just as I was pondering whether to forfeit these points and find a different numerical combination on a different day, I received a bonus package from another user (it is possible for users to gift each other points). The package contained 20 points, which boosted my point balance to 49, with my 15 points in reserve I was able to bring it up to 64 points, which is a very favourable combination since it is the square of eight 8 (49 and 64 are also consecutive square products of 7 and 8 respectively, a remarkable coincidence as it marks the transition from an unlucky number (7) to a good one (8)). I gladly topped up my account and ended the day on 64 points, which was quite remarkable considering how bad it all seemed at the beginning of the day. Numbers are indeed everywhere, and much like life numerical meaning fluctuates between good and bad constantly in the vicissitudes of life. The moment one feels that one is having a bad day, a small shift in numerical current can alter one’s luck. As Galileo once famously said, mathematics is the language of the universe.
