Connectivity and Productivity
I have mentioned before that I am a night hound and I regularly work at night, to the extent that I often work through the night and get to see sunrise through the seasons. Everyone has his/her moments of productivity, which may depend on one’s personal preferences. For me, I have mentioned that I like to work when the rest of the world is sleeping, not only because I appreciate the total silence around me but also because working in the dead of the night gives me the false illusion that I am making progress over others. A pleasant consequence of my nocturnal routine is that I can communicate with those who live and work in different timezones, specifically those in the US who are usually approaching the evening when I click into my night working gear in the UK and those in Asia who are at the start of their working day as I begin my daily (or, rather, nightly) work routine. This works quite well for me, since I have many connections (personal and professional) on either side of the continent that I am on and working at night allows me to multi-task as I co-ordinate with them while going through my daily work. The COVID pandemic made us all realise the importance of the internet and it forced us to use as much tech-savvy creativity as possible and explore the full potential and limits of the internet for remote working, a silver-lining which continues to affect our work routine till this day. While much of my work consists of independent research that requires self-driven persistence in getting to the bottom of my investigations, I do regularly communicate with colleagues on either side of my continent to obtain key materials that I need for my work, namely research in theoretical linguistics and East Asian (Chinese) languages. I also offer online tuition, and I have clients all around the world, many of whom are based in the US who prefer to meet after work at night (their time). Meeting them during the early hours of the day (my time) works well for all of us. Moreover, I am a keen follower of the stock market and I have financial interests in the US and Asia. Staying awake and vigilant during the European night allows me to follow my investments and observe their developments in real-time. Finally, last but not least, I have family and friends in Hong Kong where I am from, and although social media channels work for asynchronous communication, it is sometimes necessary to communicate via chat or messaging. Being awake during the same hours can be very advantageous, and I am glad that my daily/nightly routine fits that of my connections.
I am a professional linguist and I do research in theoretical linguistics, mainly formal syntax and historical/comparative linguistics. I am also a simultaneous translator/interpreter and a language teacher, and my language specialisations include Indo-European, Latin, Greek, Romance (especially Spanish) and East Asian, namely Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese). I am also interested in history and politics, especially the development of western political philosophy, which is the result of my education in the humanities (literature, history, philosophy, philology) at the University of Oxford (Balliol College). My favourite sport is football (soccer) and I am a long-term die-hard supporter of ACFiorentina in Italy: Batistuta, Baggio, Rui Costa, Toldo from the 1990s/2000s will always be in my heart, as they were my childhood heroes.
